FARMHOUSE

Wada, Palghar

The farmhouse at Palghar is the perfect embodiment of our work philosophy.

Right from its planning to the materials used and labour employed, everything about the house

is as local and tribal as it can be. Planned in the traditional adiwasi grid, the house boasts of

a separate veranda between all four bedrooms with a connecting central hall.

The attic acts as the fifth bedroom.

Area: 1681 sq.ft.

COMBINATION OF BURNT BRICK AND ADOBE

All internal walls are of adobe in mud mortar.

For external walls, burnt brick is used up to cill level and at the corners. The policy being to reduce the amount of burnt bricks and use it where it is necessary - this is ideal for both ecology and economy.

REUSE OF MATERIAL

A lot of material, including the doors and windows, floor tiles and structural timber were reused from an old adiwasi house.

The flooring was bare minimum - transforming according to requirements-

with old Shahabad tiles for the kitchen and toilets, Terracotta tiles for the living and bedrooms and a mud and cowdung floor for the verandas.

mud plaster

Level of finishing is minimal - with mud plaster in the verandas and bedrooms. The hall and attic has whitewash on exposed adobe - to provide relief and enhance the space.

ATTIC floor

With wooden flooring that doubles up as a childrens' bedroom and play area; it is accessible by a ladder.
