twin BUNGALOWS



Vadodara, Gujarat



Located in the heart of the city of Vadodara, the structures stands looks unique,

yet belonging to the surroundings. It is built in exposed brick masonry in lime mortar,

with an R.C.C. filler slab. Inspired by the traditional planning of the houses of the area,

the two bungalows are connected by a central courtyard.

Hot and dry climate with little rainfall.



Site context



Located within the city limits, with an access road provided from the north.

CENTRAL COURTYARD



Inspired by the traditional Gujarati dwellings (pols), the houses share a common central courtyard. This along with providing good ventilation in the dry climate also ensures ample passive lighting in the house.

The courtyard is flanked by a series of segmental arches in a load bearing wall, that connect the private living rooms to the semi - private couryard and ensure good lighting and ventilation



BRICK JALIS



Brick jalis fitted with glass bottles provide indirect lighting and a stained glass effect, reminescent of the stained glass windows of the traditional Pol.



Bay windows



Providing built-in setas and additional opportunities for cross ventilation, through small openings under the seats
